The God of High School (2015 game)

The God of High School (갓 오브 하이 스쿨, Gas Obeu Hai Seukul) is a mobile app MMORPG based on the South Korean webtoon written and illustrated by Park Yongje. It was developed for Android and iOS by YD Online Corp and released in South Korea in May 2015, though operations were later licenced to Woncomz Inc. A Japanese version was released by NC Japan Corp in August 2016, which was later re-released along with a Chinese version by HappyTuk Company in December 2019 and an international version by PangSky in March 2021.

Gameplay[]

This is a full-voiced comic game in which the story progresses alongside animated scenes straight out of the manhwa, and such plot segments are denoted as Quests in this game.

Like many other MMORPGs on mobile apps, subscribed users can collect Player Characters (PC) through battles, lottery, pieces assembly or shop purchases. They can then use the PCs in battle to progress the storyline and/or gain experience, as ingredients to strengthen, level-up or evolve other PCs, or simply as inventory to sell for gold. PCs can also be enhanced through Equipment, Emblems, Accessories gained through battle or purchase, or being left to train against a straw post for 1/3/10 hours.

The battles are fought using teams consisting of up to 5 PCs owned by the user, with an optional additional helper that is either borrowed from a friend user or hired using gold. After configuring the team, the user will have to fight through 1 to 9 Rounds before completing a Boss Battle in order to win the battle.
How effective a PC's attacks are against an certain opponent depends on the Attributes (fire, water, wood, light, darkness) of the attacker and defender. The Leader Skill of the PC selected to be leader as well as the Types of the PCs fighting and their positioning can affect how the team as a whole will fare, especially in dragged-out battles.
Each PC will have 1 or 2 Active Skills for attack, defense, healing or support, some of which will require mini-games in order to utilise to best effect. Certain groups of PCs, when placed into the same team, can generate various effects through a Bond Skill, and may even be able to unleash a powerful Combination Attack.
After a successful battle, users may get rewarded with gold, new PCs, soul stones, emblems and/or character/equipment pieces.

There are a variety of modes on the game map for users to find battle missions:

  • Main Story Mode: The story of the released Season is divided into various Acts that users with teams meeting the team level requirement can access to battle through Events against opponents as they appear in the manhwa. Successful completion of Events will unlock the Quest movies.

Scholarships are also offered to users who meet various requirements.

Characters[]

Depending on the maximum level able to be attained, PCs are ranked into Ancient God, God, The Six, Judge, Normal and Substandard classes.

As the game continues to be developed, older editions of PCs are replaced by upgraded editions with enhanced stats that are marked as [Real]. Some PCs can be further upgraded into [Inherited] editions that retain the existing skills, or into [Modified] editions that use new skills. Later PCs can be enhanced by deifying them into the Heavenly Realm/Sage Realm or even into [Ancient] editions, and Greed can be implanted onto them at a risk.

Lyrics[]

fly to high fly to high

fly to high fly to high

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Probably because of the extreme prejudice and bigotry that the Japanese society as a whole hold against anything Korean, when they came out with the Japanese version, the developers enacted drastic measures so that the Japanese users will NOT realise they are actually playing a Korean game.
Using the fact that the franchise was basically unheard of in Japan at the time to their advantage (since LINE MANGA did not release a Japanese translation of the manga until 2019), the developers Japanized all Korean names, and replaced all references to Korean locations and culture with Japanese ones.
    This resulted in the internationally recognised names like Jin Mori, Han Daewi, Yu Mira being turned into Yakumo Jin, Sakurai Ryo, Takatsuki Akane, places like Gangwon-Do and Jeju instead getting referred to as Hokkaido and Kyushu, foods like bulgogi being substituted by takoyaki, and martial arts like Taekwondo and Taekkyeon ending up as Kyakujutsu (Foot Skill) and Kyakugi (Foot Play)....( ̄Д ̄;;
Needless to say, the Korean theme song was replaced by a totally different Japanese one.
