It’s not an issue of how strong the enemy is, nor how little time we have. Whether we can do it or not is not important. What matters is, whether we act or not, simple as that.

—Gang Daehyeop, at the Shadow meeting discussing the preparations for ‘D-Day’

Gang Daehyeop is the main protagonist of The God of High School:Eclipse, and the lead Field Agent of Shadow.

Appearance[]

Gang Daehyeop is a young man of average build sporting a muscular body with his hair dyed yellow. He starts off wearing his school uniform when going out and a singlet in casual moments, but after joining Shadow is regularly seen wearing the red company uniform and a Shield Suit.

Personality[]

Daehyeop is boisterous and eager to engage in fights against strong opponents to test his mettle, but at the same time he also bears a strong sense of justice, always reminding himself to do the right thing, which renders his thoughts pure. He had aspired to become a superhero since childhood, and made it a policy to not kill people nor harm innocents. In addition he likes Jjimdalk.

Ever since battling various kinds of fiendish enemies during his employment at Shadow, Daehyeop developed a deep fury against the malicious supervillains, the eradication of whom he sees as a duty even though it will make the government view him as a threat to their rule. Daehyeop though likes to bear this mantle all by himself, and on multiple occasions went into battle alone in order to spare his colleagues from danger.

History[]

When he was 2 years old, Daehyeop lost his father to the explosions that erupted during the battle between Jin Taejin and The Six. Living with his mother in Gangwon-do, he befriended Seo Yuri while in primary school after he stood up for her against her father who was forcing her into his custody. Some time later he seriously injured himself after leaping out of a third-storey window at school in an attempt to mimic Superman, and had at one recital wet his pants.

In the years afterwards, Daehyeop started challenging all kinds of hoodlums and Charyeok Users in Gangwon-do, gathering himself a band of followers at school in addition to fame as a skilled high school fighter.

Plot[]

Eclipse[]

Heroes of Street[]

Daehyeop had initially longed to be invited to the G.O.H. Tournament where he will be able to test himself against the strongest high school students in South Korea. After waiting ages without receiving an invitation, Daehyeop with the help of Yuri repeatedly sent emails containing videos of his abilities to the Tournament’s management to protest. When these and continuous phone calls still didn’t get him a response, Daehyeop finally gave up and decided to transfer to a school in Chungcheongbuk-do where nobody knows him so that he can concentrate on studying.

He ended up sitting next to Ban Sihyeon in his new school, deigning to act as a lackey to the class bullies in order to conceal his identity as a powerful fighter. Yet days later when Yuri came looking for him, a series of misunderstandings culmulated in her getting kidnapped by Sihyeon, prompting Daehyeop to throw off his cover and reveal his powers. After storming Sihyeon’s Dungeon in a battle of Charyeok, Daehyeop successfully cleared all stages, but at Yuri’s suggestion made friends with Sihyeon, whom in the weeks since he shared a close relationship with.

It was at this period when Daehyeop received an invitation to an interview in Seoul from Sin Yunseong, which made him think that he was finally accepted into the G.O.H. Tournament. He subsequently got challenged by Sin Taepung and Eric Sin who were trying to stop him from going to the interview, though after an even match Gang Daehyeop got even more determined to set off for Seoul.

The trip to Seoul started off with Daehyeop getting his money stolen by Violet Ella Wong Perez, and when he finally made it to COEX where the G.O.H. Tournament was held, he was pitted against Yun Taesu in a game to win restaurant coupons. His positive evaluation of Jegal Taek’s martial prowess managing to move Taesu, Daehyeop got invited to spend a night at his hideout before heading off to the interview on the following day.

Daehyeop soon discovered that this employment interview with Shadow had no connection with the G.O.H. Tournament, thus vented his frustration by demonstrating his abilities that surprised Yunseong and got him past the first round of interviews. Hearing Yunseong later in the day explain Shadow’s mission of catching Charyeok-wielding criminals, Daehyeop agreed to continue interviewing for Shadow, yet at the final round discovered that it was a field operation targeting Taesu who was actually a serial murderer. Initially rejected from the interview because of his acquaintance with Taesu, Daehyeop got persuaded by Yuri to go help Yunseong with the operation anyways, but upon returning to the Shadow office building ran into Violet directing her Nox subordinates with looting the documents and computers. Attacked by the Nox followers and nearly blown up, a wounded Daehyeop was rescued by Esna and Johnson, who at his request transported him to Taesu’s hideout where the police under Baek Yeonwoo’s command were getting slaughtered. After rendezvousing with Han Yewon, Daehyeop went and battled Taesu, but despite battering his friend he was dragged down by his wounds and nearly killed before Taepung dropped in to finish Taesu off.

Now accepted into Shadow, Daehyeop spent some time with Yuri and Sihyeon while he helped police catch Charyeok-wielding criminals, but soon got involved in the bank robbery staged by Violet’s Nox brethren, during which he fought Violet who wielded his own Charyeok. After Violet had her cynical view of humanity shattered by his pure personality, Daehyeop agreed to accompany her for a night if she would work for Shadow, though it nearly got him in trouble when Yunseong and Park Jinoh discovered that he was consorting with a Nox follower.

In Nine Dragons’ attack on the secret Shadow headquarters, Daehyeop took the lead in fighting off the army of Marionettes alongside Taepung so that the other employees can escape. However, after he fended off Yamato’s missile attack, he and Taepung then got ensnared in Sakura Yui’s mind control which made them fight each other, with Daehyeop getting defeated after he regained his will and tried to stop the rampaging Taepung, and ended up getting rescued by Taesu and Violet.

Upon discovery of Yamato’s plan on ‘D-Day’ to turn tens of millions of people worldwide into Marionettes using Dream Skulls, Daehyeop inspired the remaining Shadow members to go stop Yamato despite their setbacks and the absence of Yunseong and Eric. Reuniting with Yunseong and Lee Sujin at COEX on ‘D-Day’, Daehyeop went with them to Busan where Yamato was going to release the Dream Skulls. Managing to stop the release by robbing a bank and scattering the money all over the district, Daehyeop went after Yamato who was trying to escape by helicopter back to Japan, yet got repeatedly interrupted by the immortal Hiro. Mentally scarred by all the atrocities committed by Yamato in his attempt to escape, Daehyeop with the help of Violet and Taepung successfully caught up with Yamato, before overpowering Hiro and convincing him to stop helping the mad scientist. Subsequently surrounded by government forces led by a reluctant Yeonwoo, Daehyeop agreed to assist Hiro with breaking out, and threw the ghost towards Yui’s location while stopping Yamato’s last-ditch escape attempt.

Informed by Yu Chiyeoung that the Dream Skulls were still functioning through the Ouroboros now under the control of Hajime Ryo, Daehyeop briefly found himself and his colleagues as fugitives running from the South Korean government who at this point saw Shadow as a threat. This fugitive life during which he had to be aided by Taesu was fortunately cut short when the government needed them to assist Japan on dealing with Ryo, and after the near-death experience from Yunseong’s training Daehyeop learned to bring out his full potential. Arriving in Nagoya with Yunseong and Yewon, Daehyeop headed off alone to fight Ryo, sparking a city-shattering battle despite his Charyeok energies nearly all spent at that point. Daehyeop ended up wounded unto death by the power Ryo drained from other Charyeok Users, but was then fully healed by Yewon, after which he totally overwhelmed Ryo who was forced to flee.
